AIRPORT CLASSIFICATIONS
Gateway Airport
Considered a starting point for the backcountry. Offers fuel, A&P facilities and pilot lounge. Generally, within 60 miles of at least two Category 3 airstrips. May qualify for extra points for the explorer award
Category 1:PAVED
Airports with fully paved runways offering standad approach and departure profiles. Suitable for all common aircraft types and requiring no special backcountry skills.
Category 2: UNPAVED COMMUNITY
With easy approach/departure and smooth long runway (turf/gravel) that is accessible to most aircraft types. Maximum RHI* of 9 where stated.
Category 3: UNPAVED BACKCOUNTRY
These airports are typical Idaho backcountry strips that require specific aicraft and pilot skills. This restricts them to pilots experienced and competent in backcountry operations. They possess a maximum RHI* of 24 (under half the highest RHI* of 50) and minimum 1800’ runway length. The more demanding airstrips are excluded.
