Announcing Our 2026 Winner
2026 Winner: Calie Bailey

Calie Bailey is a student at Utah State University pursuing a degree in fixed-wing aviation, with the goal of becoming an airline pilot. She earned her private pilot license in Sandpoint, Idaho, marking an early milestone in her aviation journey. Calie discovered her passion for aviation during her junior year of high school and has remained committed to that path ever since.

She graduated as the salutatorian of her class from Sandpoint High School and is currently complementing her flight training with a minor in Air Traffic Control. Outside of her academic and aviation pursuits, Calie enjoys staying active and engaged through hobbies such as sand volleyball and rock climbing, as well as playing the trombone, with a particular appreciation for jazz music.

I want to begin by saying how important this award is to me and why I am so thankful for even being chosen as an awardee for this scholarship. Ever since high school, I have had the itch to fly and make it a real possibility. When I first stepped foot in a general aviation plane, it was one the most memorable experiences of my life, and I knew I had to pursue it. Yet, as everyone knows, aviation is not cheap and can be very costly towards young teens and adults pursuing a degree in it. That is why I am very thankful for scholarship opportunities that are provided for students my age who have a passion towards aviation. It truly is not possible without groups such as the IAA members and the donors as well, including the Larson-Miller Donors.

With the money provided in the scholarship, I will be able to continue my flight journey at Utah State University, in which I have to pay a hefty amount each semester for flying classes that are in addition to my tuition. Opportunities like these awards mean a lot to me because of how expensive my lessons are, and it makes the pressure of pursuing my flying career a little lighter. Directly, these funds will go towards my instrument flight training and tuition, which is another big step in my aviation career that I am very excited for.

Overall, I am very thankful for this opportunity and I am excited to continue to work hard for those supporting me.

Announcing Our 2025 Winner
2025 Winner: Elliott "Ellie" Cheek
September 2025 Update from Ellie:
“I am now preparing for my Stage 1 Check, which consists of a knowledge test, a ground, and flight portion on holds and partial panel usage during AHRS and PFD failures, so hopefully all goes well! After that test I will move on to Stage 2 which is mostly all about instrument approaches and departures, and finally Stage 3  (before my checkride) will be the Instrument cross-country.
As I am also minoring in ATC, I am currently taking a course in National Airspace operations and it is really interesting to be able to gain a deeper understanding of what I am flying through and who I talk to.”

Ellie Cheek is an Aviation Technology/Professional Pilot student at Utah State University (USU). A resident of Eagle, ID, Ellie graduated from Bishop Kelly High School in 2024. Taking her first discovery flight out of Nampa, ID in 2023, Ellie set her sights on finding a university program where she could train to become a professional pilot.

At Utah State, Ellie has completed her Private Pilot training, including her solo from Logan, UT to Pocatello, ID, and is waiting to complete her checkride. She will continue her training over the summer to complete the cross country ground and flight courses in order to move on to instrument training in the fall. Ellie plans to become a Certified Flight Instructor for USU in the future.
Ellie maintains a 4.0 GPA and is an active member of the school community. She is a member of Women in Aviation International and represented USU at their 2025 international conference in Denver, CO. She is also a member of the USU Student Alumni Association and sings soprano in the university choir.
While living in Eagle, ID, Ellie worked as a horse guide and farm hand at Twin Oaks Farms for several seasons. She also worked at Eagle Island State park in the shave ice shack and volunteered countless hours to her local church choir. Ellie is looking forward to the day when she can fly over the beautiful state she calls home.
From Ellie:
“I am honored and incredibly grateful to be selected as the recipient of the Larson-Miller Flight Scholarship. This generous award will significantly support my flight training and I appreciate the confidence you have in me as an aviation student. I am excited about the opportunities this scholarship will provide, and I look forward to making the most of it as I continue working toward my aviation goals.
I take my studies and aviation training seriously and look forward to being a good steward of your funding and hope to repay the Idaho Aviation Association and support aviation students in the future.”

Blue skies and tailwinds,
Ellie Cheek
