COMMON QUESTIONS
What if I’ve only landed on paved runways and have never flown in the backcountry?
Not all pilots either wish to or are skilled enough to meet the mountain and backcountry challenges. So the program rewards those who wish to simply stay on the Category 1 paved runways, or even the manicured grass and gravel Category 2 community airstrips.
What’s the difference between the two unpaved categories?
Category 2 are developed unpaved strips. Often community airstrips comprising mowed turf or gravel, close to a town or population center. Category 3 on the other hand are true backcountry airstrips that often require additional skills to safely approach, land and depart. They are often in remote areas. EXPLORE IDAHO covers many Category 3 airstrips but sets a safety limit of 24 RHI, and avoids sensitive areas such as the Middle Fork of the Salmon.
What is a Selfie Spot?
The Selfie Spot is a placard that will be specific to each airport and attached in a prominent location. Participants must take a cellphone selfie with this placard in the background as it identifies that specific airport.
Where will I find the Selfie Spot?
Selfie Spots are generally located at the most convenient location for a pilot at an airport such as an FBO* or pilot lounge noticeboard. At remote airports, Selfie Spots are likely to be near the windsock or a prominent tree. The IAA website will keep pilots updated of Selfie Spot locations and of course a casual stroll around a remote airstrip looking for the Selfie Spot is rarely a bad thing.
What if the Selfie Spot isn’t there?
There may be occasions when the Selfie Spot simply cannot be found. It may have been eaten by an animal or simply blown away in a storm. In this case, take a selfie with something that identifies the airport. We can then hopefully verify the location. We would kindly ask that you report any missing Selfie Spot so we can get a replacement as soon as possible.
How do I upload my photo?
We have made it easy for you. Simply log in to the IAA webpage; go to YOUR PROFILE PAGE and press ‘enter’. You will find a location for uploading pictures. Simply click on that. It will take you to your photos. Select the photo(s) you wish to upload, press enter, and that’s it.
Why aren’t popular strips like Indian Creek and Chamberlain Basin included?
The Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area is pristine wilderness and a popular and busy area for pilots, rafters, hikers and hunters. Out of respect for non-aviation users we have excluded all Frank Church strips. Additionally, our runway minimum is 1800’ so Krassel is excluded.
*Note: Where FBO’s charge user fees, the Selfie Spot may be placed in an alternate location.
